Kyoto in November is one of the most photographed weeks in Asia — and it earns the attention. The momiji (maple) season turns the entire eastern hillside scarlet, and the temple gardens that spend most of the year as serene green spaces suddenly become cathedrals of red and gold.
Days 1–2: Eastern Kyoto
Start with Kiyomizu-dera at sunrise, when the wooden stage overlooks a valley full of maple. Walk down the cobbled Sannenzaka path to Kodai-ji. Budget a full day for the walk from Nanzen-ji up the Philosopher’s Path to Ginkaku-ji.
Days 3–4: Arashiyama
Stay in a ryokan in the mountains, not in the city. Hozu-gawa river cruises run through the gorge at peak foliage. Take the Sagano Scenic Railway early — by 10am the platforms are full.
Days 5–7: The quieter north
Most tourists skip Ohara. That’s your signal. Sanzen-in’s moss garden under maple is one of the most beautiful fifteen-minute walks in Japan.
